Fire At Deni High Will Not Impact Student Studies

Students have been assured that their studies will not be affected by a fire that destroyed large sections of Deniliquin High School overnight.

The fire has caused significant damage to the building at the corner of Wellington and Henry St, with the Henry Street corridor and the section wrapping near the oval appearing to have been largely destroyed.

“Students need to know that the school community will support them, and that their studies will continue uninterrupted,” Helen said.

The section most impacted contains rooms that have been traditionally used for mathematics, design and technology, science and English. The and the school library has also been damaged.

“Obviously the cause of the fire is still being investigated,” Helen said. “We can’t let these things distract our kids.”

“Students and their families are the priority. We can’t let the actions of one or two people undermine our community.”

The FRNSW media team reported one firefighter was injured during the incident, and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Helen has already been contacted by representatives of the Minister for Education and also the Department of Infrastructure about the fire about plans to urgently accomodate the needs of students. This may involve classrooms at other locations in Deniliquin.

“I encourage all students to stay focussed on their studies as we fix everything else,” Helen said. “Our students are the number one priority in all of this.”
