Construction underway for new halls at Griffith and Wade High sites after successful demerger
Students at Murrumbidgee’s two public high schools will soon have their own multipurpose halls for academic, sport, music and community activities, with NSW Premier Chris Minns and Independent Member for Murray Helen Dalton today marking the start of construction at the two de-merged school sites.
Independent Member for Murray Helen Dalton said: “As a former teacher, I understand how vital it is for students to have access to high quality facilities that support both learning and wellbeing.”
“Prior to becoming Premier, Chris Minns promised me, and the people of Murray, that if he formed government he would demerge the two high schools and he is honouring that commitment,” Helen said.
The new halls at the Griffith and Wade schools will also enhance students’ fitness and provide venues for community performances, sports events and gatherings.
“Throughout the demerger process, listening to the community has been key for me and I’ve fought hard to ensure these new multipurpose halls are truly fit for purpose.
With the community’s support, the State Government listened to us and acted to deliver halls equipped with proper staging and seating plus air conditioning and heating,” Mrs. Dalton added.
Other features in both facilities now include airconditioned performance spaces, kitchenettes, a full-sized basketball court, storage rooms, accessible toilets, showers, change rooms and undercover areas.
Mrs. Dalton said: “We have all waited a long time for this and these spaces will give Griffith and Wade students every opportunity to excel in academics, sport, music and community events for generations to come.”
The start of construction is a significant milestone in the demerger of the two high schools after the Nationals disastrously merged the two to form Murrumbidgee Regional High School.
After consultation with the school communities, new names for both schools will be decided later this year. Consultation on new school crests and uniforms will follow.
Zauner Construction will build multipurpose halls at both schools, including stages and retractable seating for audiences. The Griffith site’s library will also be refurbished.
