Professor Maxwell Hopp Paediatric Ward

Today we honour Professor Maxwell Hopp with the naming of the Paediatric Ward at Griffith Base Hospital in his memory.

As confirmed by the Minister for Health , the ward will carry his name, alongside a memorial photo and plaque developed with his family. It is a permanent tribute to a man who transformed children’s health care in our town.

When Professor Hopp arrived in 1999, Griffith had no paediatrician. Families were forced to travel hours for treatment. Over the years, at least 5,000 children were able to receive care close to home because he chose to stay here.

He built the region’s first allergy clinic of its kind. He worked relentless hospital rounds from ICU to neonatal to maternity. He treated around 60 children a week. He carried the load largely on his own for years.

His sudden passing was felt across the entire community. Parents, former patients, colleagues and friends all share the same sense of loss. He was not just a specialist. He was part of the fabric of Griffith.

Naming the paediatric ward in his honour ensures his contribution will never be forgotten. Every child cared for in that space will do so under the name of the doctor who dedicated his life to them.
