Anthony Albanese is about to hand SunRice a multi-million dollar rescue package, from the same Government whose water buybacks pushed SunRice into cutting 78 jobs at Leeton and Deniliquin.

It's like breaking someone's leg, then offering them crutches. Maybe just stop hurting people in the first place.

Buy the water, grow less rice, mill fewer jobs. That's the chain. SunRice has now cut around 200 roles since late 2025 and the 78 at Leeton and Deniliquin are just the latest.

Every one of those pay packets used to land in a local shop, a school, a footy club. Out here, we're interconnected in a way Canberra doesn't seem to get. Hurt one of us, you hurt all of us.

A rescue package might slow the bleeding, and I hope it does, because those families need it. But crutches don't mend a broken leg. Unless buybacks stop for good, more SunRice-style job losses are coming
