DROP BY DROP
Let me list just a few of the things that have happened this year alone that are destroying the food security of our nation drop by drop.
Water bills flagged to rise up to 10 per cent a year plus inflation, three years running, under IPART's own draft framework
Fertiliser supply so tight that farmers are being warned to lock in phosphate early, with prices already up around $200 a tonne
A diesel crisis that left farming towns with empty bowsers and farmers a week away from running dry
Another $430 million of destructive water buybacks, paid at close to double what the water was worth
Still nothing for digital connectivity, while the black spots I mapped in 2021 remain black spots today
And $10 million from the fund meant to help our towns survive buyback damage handed to the Chinese textile giant that owns Gundaline Station, the same notorious operation workers blew the whistle on
You could almost think this government doesn't want Aussie-grown food on our shelves for the next generation.
Every one of these lands on your trolley eventually, because water, fuel and fertiliser are what it costs to grow food in this country, and when farmers pay more or go under, you pay more.
The only way to stop this cycle is a Federal Royal Commission into water, so the people behind the Murray Darling Basin Plan can finally be put under oath and made to explain where the water and the money went.
